The largest Zen temple in Kamakura, founded in 1253.
First of Kamakura's five great Zen temples, this imposing complex was founded in 1253 by regent Hōjō Tokiyori. Its vast Zen gardens and majestic buildings reflect the austerity of the Rinzai school. A hiking trail leads from the temple up to a viewpoint that offers, on clear days, panoramas of Mount Fuji.
